DSNY Garbage Truck
Took a pic of the garbage truck through the window. They come through my neighborhood every Monday and Thursday. Everyone puts their trash out on the curb the night before and it is magically whisked away by DSNY.
Thursday – trash pick-up day
We didn’t put out any trash for pick-up last week or on Monday. We did, however, put out some trash this morning. It’s hard to tell from the pic but that is a full bag of kitchen trash (two weeks … Continue reading
Typical NYC trash
This is what urban residential trash and recycling looks like in NYC. It’s piled high on the sidewalk in front of the building (this happens to be a large high-rise apartment building in mid-town Manhattan). Typically residents are responsible for … Continue reading
The Rubbish Diet – Week 2
Uh-oh. I’m barely into week 2 of The Rubbish Diet and I’m already increasing my weekly generation of trash rather than decreasing it! Last week was a busy week for me. I wasn’t home much and thus not generating a … Continue reading
Week 1 Trash Pick-up
Monday and Thursdays are trash pick-up days in our neighborhood in Queens, NY. Thursdays are also recycling pick-up days. Last night we put out one bin with one bag of trash from the house, and the small bag of litterbug … Continue reading
The Litter Dilemma
Litterbugs are not helping my rubbish diet. Yesterday, I cleaned up other people’s trash from my yard. That plastic bag I’m holding is about 2/3 full of plastic cups, random pieces of paper, mini-booze bottles, a cigarette box, and snack … Continue reading
The Rubbish Diet
When I told my husband we were participating in The Rubbish Diet, he asked, “Are you eating less garbage?” Well, kind of. Starting Monday, January 23 I’ll be reporting how much trash and recyclables we throw out each week. I will … Continue reading
Trash on the streets
When I first moved to NY from Seattle I was shocked by all the trash piled up on the streets. In Seattle it generally gets put in dumpsters in alley ways behind buildings and out of sight (not to mention … Continue reading
Why I hate recycling conversion factors
In measuring recycling performance you must have some sort of data. Right now everyone wants that data in tons. Tonnage is fine when you’re dealing with a weighed container (a compactor or scale truck), but otherwise you’re stuck converting volume … Continue reading
Why I didn’t recycle my plastic yogurt container
My friend Pete asked, “Why was the plastic yogurt container trashed? Why wasn’t that recycled?” Good question Pete. I buy single serve yogurt containers. Lately I’ve been buying them in cardboard packaged six-packs at BJ’s because it is cheaper than … Continue reading
